And I will close with this....'Twas the night before Champs (by me)

'Twas the night before Champs, and all through the pool,

Not a swimmer was stirring, it was finally cool.

The goggles were hung by the swim caps with care,
In hopes that a victory soon would be there.
The swimmers were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of medals danced in their heads.
With coaches' advice and nerves in a snap,
They settled their brains for a pre-Champs nap.
When out on the deck there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the poolside I flew like a flash,
Tore open the door and heard a great splash.
The sun on the water, so sparkly and bright,
Gave a luster of midday to the still of the early daylight.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a squad of Hammerhead teammates, ready to cheer.
With a strong, eager coach, so lively and driven,
I knew in a moment it must be Coach Helen.
More rapid than sharks, her swimmers they came,
And she whistled and shouted and called them by name:
"Now, Molly! Now, Lila Kate! Now, Emilia and Nate!
On, Chase! On, Blake! On, Ryan and Jake!
To the end of the pool! To the top of the wall!
Now swim away! Swim away! Swim away all!"
As fast as the fish when they leap to the sky,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the high.
So up to the pool's edge the swimmers they flew,
With their hearts full of spirit, and Coach Helen too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the deck,
The prancing and dancing of each little step.
As I drew in my head and was turning around,
Down the lane Coach Helen came with a bound.
She was dressed all in red, from her head to her toe,
And her clothes were all tarnished with chlorine and our logo.
A bundle of towels she had flung on her back,
And she looked like a leader, ready to attack.
Her eyes—how they twinkled! Her dimples, how merry!
Her cheeks were like roses, her nose like a cherry!
Her droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the whistle she blew was as white as the snow.
The end of the night was nearing, just so,
With swimmers all dreaming of a big Champs show.
With their suits and their caps all ready to wear,
They'd soon be swimming with strength and with care.
She spoke not a word but went straight to her work,
And filled all the lanes; then turned with a jerk,
And laying her finger aside of her nose,
And giving a nod, to the podium rose.
She sprang to her feet, to her team gave a whistle,
And away they all swam like the down of a thistle.
But I heard her exclaim, ‘ere she dove out of sight,
“Happy Champs to all, and to all a fast night!”

    Go Hammerheads!

    Warmly,

    Skye
